What to Wear to a Soccer Game If You’re a Newbie
You may be planning on attending a MLS game or have the opportunity to watch a Premier League game in England.
You’re so excited but maybe nervous about what to wear to a soccer game. This article will help you out!
As an aside, I got the opportunity to go to England and watch a couple of professional matches including at Old Trafford. We saw an exciting Man U versus West Ham matchup. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! It exceeded all my expectations.
What Should I Wear to a Professional Soccer Game?
For obvious reasons, the easiest way to support your team is to simply wear a team jersey (also known as a kit) to the game.
Rather than wearing the entire uniform (jersey top, shorts, and socks), just a jersey with jeans or casual shorts is recommended. This way you don’t appear to be a “try hard”.
The alternative to a jersey is to wear an outfit that mirrors the colors of the team you are in support of.
For example, if you are watching the New England Revolution, dark blue and red would be your color choice.
If you are attending a Man City game, you’ll want to wear light blue and a white shirt.
If you don’t have a jersey or the right colors to sport on game day, a team scarf is great to wear.
Many stadiums will sell scarves on their way to the game. Fans love wearing their team colors and logo draped over their shoulders!
What Should I Wear To Away Soccer Games?
Wearing your team’s jersey or brand colors is a great way to show your support if you are attending your favorite team’s match at a different stadium.
In most stadiums, soccer fans are friendly. There might be a little bit of heckling, especially if your team’s losing, but you shouldn’t be in any danger.
If someone does confront you or your group then I recommend you politely walk away. Let things cool down for a bit before going to your seat again.
Remember, you’ll most likely be outnumbered so don’t do anything irrational! I don’t want to say “I told you so.”
What to Wear During Cold Soccer Games?
Depending on what time of year you go and where the game is being played, you may experience some chilly weather.
In some stadiums, the temperature will drop considerably as the sun goes down. And, even indoor stadiums can get their fair share of cold breezes coming through.
Wearing warm clothing and layering is important to enjoying the game.
A perfect outfit for a 35-degree Fahrenheit game is a thermal long-sleeve under a shirt or jersey with a warm jacket or sweatshirt over it. You can always take layers off as your body adjusts to the cold climate.
Also, using HotHands hand warmers is a great way to stay extra warm. You can put them in your gloves or your shoes to stay extra cozy. I use them and they work like they should!
What Shoes Should I Wear to a Game?
From the parking lot to the stadium and once inside the stadium, fans will do a good amount of walking. For this reason, it’s important to wear comfortable sneakers.
Cleats, sandals, dress shoes, and high heels are not recommended.
Instead, wear sneakers that you would wear every day. In addition to walking, you’ll be doing a lot of standing. A good walking shoe will help prevent any aches from the foot up to your neck.
Should I Bring Any Accessories to the Game?
When attending a soccer game, you’ll want to pack as light as possible.
Depending on the weather and where your seats are located you may want to consider bringing some of the following:
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Umbrella
- Binoculars
- Baseball cap
- Pen (for autographs)
It’s Game Time!
The most important thing to remember when figuring out what to wear to a soccer game is that you’ll want to be comfortable.
You don’t want to be so cold that you’re antsy to get back into your car with the entire second half of the match to go. You also don’t want to be dripping in sweat the entire time.
If you’re unsure, layer up because you can always take off a jacket!
Watching a professional soccer game should be an enjoyable and unique experience. Take our recommendations for what it is but I think it provides a good starting point.
Enjoy the game. Cheer for your favorite team. And, be in the moment because 90 minutes goes by too fast sometimes.
