Early Life of Alyssa Thompson

Alyssa Thompson was born on October 4, 2004, in Los Angeles, California, to Karen and Mario Thompson.

She grew up in a family of soccer enthusiasts, where her father was a former college player, and her mother was a soccer coach. Alyssa started playing soccer at a very young age and showed great potential from the beginning.

Alyssa has two younger sisters, Gisele and Zoe, who also share her passion for soccer. Gisele is just a year younger than Alyssa, and they started playing soccer when they were 5 and 4 years old, respectively.

At the age of 9, Alyssa enrolled in Total Futbol Academy (TFA), alongside her sister Gisele, to participate in boys’ teams.

They later joined Elite Clubs National League club Real So Cal, where they played until the COVID-19 pandemic. At the age of 13, Thompson was already playing with players who were four years older than her!

In 2020, Thompson returned to TFA and played for its under-19 team in the MLS Next league, becoming the only female player in the league at 17 years old.

Alyssa attended the Harvard-Westlake School, a private school in Los Angeles, where she excelled both academically and athletically.

During her freshman and sophomore years of high school, she scored an impressive 48 goals in just 18 games. Unfortunately, due to her involvement in the national team and club soccer, she was unable to play during her junior season.

As a high school senior, she was drafted to play professionally. And, in April 2021, Thompson received the honor of being named Gatorade Player of the Year.

Thompson’s Professional & National Career

In 2023, Thompson made history by becoming the youngest-ever NWSL draft pick when Angel City FC selected her with the first overall pick. Despite being a high school senior, Thompson signed professionally with Angel City and made her debut in the NWSL that same year.

Thompson’s talent did not go unnoticed by the United States women’s national team, and she was called up to the team for the 2023 World Cup.

On July 21, 2023, in a game against Vietnam, Alyssa became the youngest player to represent the United States in a World Cup in the last 28 years.
