Should I Shoot High or Low?
Deciding to shoot high or low in soccer can make a big difference.
You might think that shooting high will always be the right choice but it may not always be the best option.
Depending on the situation, shooting low increases the chances of your shot going in.
Benefits of shooting high:
- The keeper might be too slow to leap sideways
- You can loft it over defenders
- You can shoot a knuckleball
Benefits of shooting low:
- Typically more accurate (you eliminate gravity)
- It’s difficult for the keeper to get low on a harder kick
- More rebounding opportunities
- The ball can skip with wet turf or grass
Each split second decision is critical. But, it’s beneficial to know which type of shot is most effective. This will help you focus your training.
Here’s a description of both options…
When Should I Shoot High?
Deciding when to shoot over the keeper depends on the scenario. In these situations shooting high will yield a better outcome:
- When the goalkeeper is standing near their line
- When the goalkeeper has their knees and back bent low
- When the defenders are deeper in the penalty box
- When you are shooting from a wider angle (i.e. – straight on) and have a good balance
- When you are further away from the goal
When Should I Shoot Low?
In these situations, you’ll want to shoot low. This will increase your chances of getting the ball by the keeper.
- When the keeper is outside their goal line
- When the goalkeeper is standing tall
- When you are closer to the goal (10 yards or closer)
- When you are off balance
- When you are shooting from a narrower angle
Final Thoughts
I understand each scenario is very unique but knowing when and where to shoot can help your offensive game.
I see many youth soccer players consistently shoot high. It doesn’t matter the situation, they’ll try to hit in the top corners. The ball usually goes much higher or spins to either side away from the goal.
If they could play out the scenario in their head first, they’ll realize that they could’ve scored simply by shooting low.
Quickly assessing the defenders, keepers positioning and your opportunities, you’ll increase your chances of scoring! I hope one day I have an opportunity to tell you “I told you so”.
Oh, and remember, you’ll rarely have the perfect shot so fire away.
