Peak at 25
Young athletes who want to play in college should have a long-term view of their journey. This is much easier said than done. But, hear me out.
I’ve seen kids do wonderful things at 10 years old…only to stop working hard. They become frustrated when other kids start surpassing them.
On the flip side, I’ve seen mediocre athletes start to shine when they are 16. They go from good to great. They continue playing at the next level.
What’s the difference? A belief that they can get better mixed with a relentless work ethic.
Having the understanding that you can peak at 13 or 25 is your choice. The latter is where the magic happens. But, it takes lots of patience and discipline.
What you do today isn’t going to ruin your career. Have one bad game? Who cares. Learn from it and use it to improve.
You aren’t trying to reach your potential at 12. You’re looking to get better by the week so you can continue playing many years from now.
Your potential is what you believe your potential is. Simple as that.
What If Your Goal Isn’t To Play College?
I get it. Playing college soccer isn’t going to be for everyone.
HOWEVER, thinking long-term and having a growth mindset will help you achieve many great things in life.
Even though you don’t plan on playing beyond middle or high school, sports can teach you a lot.
Work to get better every week.
Try not to let games be a distraction to your development.
Don’t fret over playing time. Earn it.
Become friends with your teammates.
This will all pass by sooner than you expect it. Trust me, you’ll look back and think how great it was.
