Making a Big & Immediate Impact as a Substitute
Substitutes in soccer can change the course of a game – they can either win or lose it for a team.
That’s a lot of weight that rests on your shoulders!
From stretching the offense to making defensive stances. There are various ways you can make an impact when you get into a game.
As a sub, your team needs to be the spark plug. Depending on the score, you may be the player who needs to put a late-minute goal into the net.
Here are some tips to make an immediate impact when you eagerly get into the game!
What is Your Role as a Substitute in Soccer?
As a substitute player, your role is crucial in making an immediate impact on the game.
To make the most of your time on the field, you need to understand your role and responsibilities as a sub.
Understanding the Game Situation
From the opening whistle, make sure you are attentive to the game.
It will benefit you if you watch your opponents to see how they play. Do they attack well? Are they tough on defense? Do they play possession ball?
You get a unique view of the game. This can help you identify any gaps and how you can exploit them.
Adapting to Your Team’s Strategy
Your coach may have an established strategy for the game. As a substitute player, it’s important to adapt to your team’s strategy and style of play.
Depending on what position you go in as, you may need to help reset your team’s offense. Or, you may need to provide defensive coverage. Or, do both.
Whatever your coaches need you to do, go out and do it to the best of your abilities.
Time’s always ticking. Don’t let 10 minutes go by to get into the groove. Prep starts before the referee raises his flag for you to go into the game.
How to Get Your Body Ready for the Game
Physical preparation is so important to make an immediate impact.
The warm up starts when you are on the sideline.
How Do You Warm Up as a Soccer Sub?
Before entering the game, you need to warm up appropriately to avoid injuries and perform at your best.
A warm-up should include dynamic stretching, jogging, and sprinting.
Be sure to stretch all the major muscle groups, including the calves, hamstrings, quadriceps, and hip flexors.
Start slow and then start mimicking game speed.
Get a little hop in your step so you are ready to enter the game!
Maintaining High Energy Levels
When you go into the game, there could be 5 minutes or 35 minutes left in the game.
No matter when you get into the game, entering with high energy levels can give your team a needed boost.
One way to do this is by staying hydrated and eating a healthy, balanced diet before the game.
Additionally, stay involved in the game. Cheer on your teammates. Stand up when they do something great. Run to the corner flag when your team scores!
How to Make the Biggest Impact Possible
As a soccer player, you can contribute in so many ways. But, you have to be ready and open to do so.
Here are some strategies that I notice work when players get into the game.
Communicate Early & Often
One of the most important things you can do as a sub is to communicate with your teammates.
Whether it’s calling for the ball or letting them know someone is behind them, calling it out can pump your team up.
Clear communication is contagious. Unfortunately, silence is too.
Be vocal and assertive, but also be respectful and listen to your teammates.
Decisive Playmaking
Being decisive in soccer can be the difference between a goal for or against you.
When you get into the game, your advantage should be mental clarity.
Mental fatigue should be wearing your opponent’s out.
Whether it’s a well-timed pass, a perfectly placed shot, or a crucial tackle, be ready to seize the moment and make a difference.
Defensive Solidity
If your team is ahead and trying to hold onto a lead, your job as a sub may be to help shore up the defense.
Your opponents may be gassed so it’s your opportunity to make tackles, steal passes, and start the counterattack.
Be disciplined and focused, and work hard to deny the opposition any opportunities to score.
Stay organized and communicate with your teammates to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
Also, don’t make silly mistakes…especially inside the box!
Offensive Aggressiveness
If your team is behind and needs a goal, your job as a sub may be to help spark the offense.
Be creative and dynamic.
Look for opportunistic ways to break down the opposition’s defense. Make runs, take shots, and be forward-thinking in your play.
Remember, the key is to make an immediate impact and help your team get back into the game.
In this case, YOU could be the difference!
Final Thoughts
The debate between starters and substitutes should be minute.
It doesn’t matter how or when you get into the game. Always do your best when you step on the field.
It can be disheartening to sit on the bench while your team is out there but don’t let that stop you from making an impact.
Every team needs that edge. That talented player to be the difference maker and lift their team.
Let that player be you!
