How to Wash a Soccer Jersey
My son’s soccer jersey absolutely stinks! He knows it and everyone around him knows it. So, as any respectable parent would, I learned how to was a soccer jersey properly.
I like to think there’s an art to it but keeping your child’s soccer jersey clean and smelling good is an easy process.
I think the hardest part is for them to remember to take their uniforms out of their soccer bag. Whether it’s cleats, shin guards, or socks, soccer players should air out their stuff after practice and games.
If not, things may have a permanent stench to them 🤮
So, without further ado, here are tips for washing a soccer jersey so it’s oh-so-fresh.
Pre-Treatment (Optional)
Before washing your soccer jersey, it’s important to pre-treat any stains to ensure they are properly removed.
This will prevent the stains from setting in and becoming permanent.
Identify Stains
Common stains on soccer jerseys include grass stains, mud, and sweat stains. It’s important to identify the type of stain so you can use the appropriate pre-treatment solution.
Pre-Treatment Solution
Once you have pinpointed the stains, you can apply a pre-treatment solution. There are several pre-treatment solutions available, including:
- Stain Remover: Use a stain remover specifically designed for the type of stain on your soccer jersey. Apply the stain remover directly to the stain and let it sit for the recommended amount of time before washing. Here’s a good one.
- Baking Soda: Mix baking soda and water to create a paste. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.
- Vinegar: Mix equal parts vinegar and water. Apply the solution to the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before washing.
It’s important to follow the instructions on the pre-treatment solution to ensure it’s used correctly. After applying the pre-treatment solution, you can wash your soccer jersey as usual.
By pre-treating stains on your soccer jersey, you can ensure that it looks its best and lasts longer.
Washing a Soccer Jersey
When it comes to washing your soccer jersey, there are two main methods: machine washing and hand washing.
Always read the care label before you start washing and drying a soccer jersey.
Machine Washing (Recommended)
If you choose to machine wash your soccer jersey, follow these steps:
- Turn your jersey inside out to protect the printing and any other embellishments.
- Use a gentle detergent and set the machine to a delicate cycle with cold water.
- Avoid using fabric softener or bleach, which can damage the fabric and printing.
- Once the cycle is complete, hang the jersey to dry. Avoid using a dryer, as the heat can damage the fabric and printing.
Hand Washing
If you prefer to wash your soccer jersey the old-school way, follow these steps:
- Fill a sink or basin with cold water and a gentle detergent.
- Turn your jersey inside out and submerge it in the water.
- Gently agitate the jersey with your hands, being careful not to scrub or twist too hard.
- Rinse the jersey thoroughly with cold water.
- Once the excess water has been squeezed out, hang the jersey to dry.
I choose to wash my son’s soccer jersey with our washing machine. It’s much easier and does the trick.
A quality kit should make it at least a full season before things start peeling or ripping. If this is not the case, you may try reaching out to the supplier to get a new pair.
Drying a Soccer Jersey
After washing your soccer jersey, it’s time to dry it. Here are two methods to dry your jersey:
Air Drying (Recommended)
Air drying is the best method to dry your soccer jersey. It’s gentle and won’t damage the fabric. Here’s how to air dry your jersey:
- Gently wring out the excess water from the jersey.
- Lay the jersey flat on a clean towel or hang it on a clothesline.
- Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators or dryers. They can damage the fabric and cause fading.
- Wait until the jersey is completely dry before wearing it.
Tumble Drying
Tumble drying is not recommended for soccer jerseys, as it can damage the fabric and cause shrinking, fading, or peeling. However, if you need to use a dryer, follow these tips:
- Use a low heat setting or a delicate cycle.
- Turn the jersey inside out to protect the printing and logos.
- Avoid overloading the dryer, as it can cause wrinkles and damage to the fabric.
- Remove the jersey from the dryer as soon as it’s dry to prevent wrinkles.
Remember, air drying is the best method to dry your soccer jersey. It’s gentle and won’t damage the fabric.
For the most part, we air dry my son’s jersey but I’ve been lazy and put it in the dryer sometimes. On a couple of occasions, the numbers peeled off because of the concentrated heat. I guess there’s a science to these things!
Storing a Soccer Jersey
When it comes to storing your freshly washed soccer jersey, there are two main options: folding or hanging.
Folding a Soccer Jersey Properly
Folding your soccer jersey is a great option if you have limited space in your closet or drawer. Here are some steps to follow for properly folding your jersey:
- Lay your jersey flat on a clean surface, with the back facing up.
- Fold the sleeves inwards towards the center of the jersey.
- Fold the bottom of the jersey up to the middle of the chest area.
- Fold the top of the jersey down to meet the bottom fold.
- Fold the jersey in half from left to right.
By following these steps, you can ensure that the lettering and number on your jersey will not crumple up and peel off.
Hanging a Jersey
If you have more space in your closet or prefer to hang your clothes, hanging your soccer jersey is a great option. Here are some tips to follow for properly hanging your jersey:
- Choose a hanger that is wide enough to support the shoulders of your jersey without stretching it out. For example, avoid using a baby hanger for a u15 jersey as it will leave bumps on the shoulder areas.
- Hang your jersey by the shoulders, making sure that it is not bunched up or wrinkled.
- Avoid hanging your jersey in direct sunlight or in a damp area, as this can cause discoloration or mildew.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your jersey stays in great condition and is ready to wear whenever you need it.
Final Thoughts
Washing a soccer jersey may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite simple if you follow the right steps.
By pre-treating stains, washing the jersey in cold water, and avoiding the dryer, you can keep your soccer jersey looking clean and fresh for many games to come.
It is important to always check the care label on your jersey and follow any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer.
With a little bit of care and attention, your soccer jersey will continue to look its best and help you perform at your highest level on the field.
If you are a parent or guardian reading this, giving your child the responsibility of washing their own jersey is a great chore!
