Individual success in soccer is often measured by the number of goals scored, assists made, or other statistical achievements. However, it is important to note that success as an individual player does not necessarily equate to success as a team.
Some spots on the field, like the defending positions, don’t really fill up the stat box. In a scoreline, there aren’t how many tackles a player made or how many times they disrupted the attacking pursuit.
Individual success can also be defined by a player’s ability to consistently perform well in their position, make smart decisions on the field, and contribute positively to the team’s overall performance. This can include factors such as good ball control, accurate passing, strong defensive skills, and effective communication with teammates.
At the end of the day, your individual success is more than goals and assists. You should be working to get better every day to be a contributor to your current and future teams.

When determining individual success, I think you should look at it more from a development perspective (not from individual results). There are several factors that can contribute to individual success in soccer. These include:
- Technical skills: This includes a player’s ability to control the ball, dribble, pass, shoot, and defend effectively.
- Physical fitness: Soccer requires a high level of endurance, speed, agility, and strength. Players who are physically fit are better equipped to perform well on the field.
- Tactical knowledge: Understanding the game’s strategies, such as how to read the opposing team’s movements and how to position oneself on the field, can greatly contribute to individual success.
- Mental toughness: Soccer can be a mentally challenging game, and players who are able to stay focused, remain calm under pressure, and maintain a positive attitude are more likely to succeed.
Ask yourself, “Am I getting better each week?” Is the trajectory of your play going in a positive direction? This is what matters but it’s hard to see.

Unlike sports like basketball where there are only five guys on a team and someone can easily take over the game, soccer demands all eleven players to contribute. If all the teammates find individual success and buy into the team dynamics, special things happen.

Another obstacle to team success is the lack of a clear strategy or game plan. This usually falls on the coach. Without a clear plan, players may not know what their roles are on the field or what the team’s overall objectives are. This can lead to disorganization and a lack of focus during games.
Finally, injuries can also be a major obstacle to team success. If key players are injured, it can disrupt the team’s chemistry and make it difficult to achieve success on the field. Or, they can sometimes find more success if others are willing to step up.
Navigating Personal Success Amidst Team Failure
Balancing Personal Goals with Team Objectives
You may have personal goals that differ from the objectives of the team. While it’s important to work towards the team’s goals, it’s also crucial to maintain focus on your personal goals. Balancing these two objectives can be challenging, but it’s essential to find a way to do so.
One way to balance personal goals with team objectives is to set achievable individual targets that align with the team’s objectives. For instance, if the team’s objective is to win the league, you can set a personal goal to score a certain number of goals or make a certain number of assists. This way, you’ll be contributing to the team’s overall objective while also working towards your personal goals.
Don’t think this is selfish. You are on a pursuit to get better. Individual goals let you assess how you are doing. Just be careful that your individual goals don’t drive your performance on the field. Instead, it should be team first and goals as a measuring stick.
Addressing Team Failure Despite Personal Success
It can be frustrating when you feel like you’re performing well individually, but the team is still “failing”. However, it’s essential to address the team’s failure and work towards improving the team’s performance.
One way to address team failure is to have open and honest communication with your coach and teammates. Identify the areas where the team is struggling and work together to find solutions. This way, you’ll be able to improve the team’s performance and achieve success as a team.
Another way to address team failure is to lead by example. Keep performing at your best, even when the team is struggling. Your performance can inspire your teammates and motivate them to improve their performance.
I’ve seen teams that open the season with multiple losses but trust the process and eventually figure it out. They used the L’s as what they need to improve instead of thinking their season is already over. This not only builds strength in the team but the individual as well. And, that season can springboard them into future success.

As a soccer player, it’s important to not only focus on your own success but also on the success of your team. Here are some strategies to help promote team success:
Encouraging teamwork is essential for a successful team. As a player, you can do this by proactively communicating with your teammates, both on and off the field.
During games, make sure to work together, move the ball around, and support each other whenever possible.
Off the field, try to build relationships with your teammates by spending time together and getting to know each other. When more friendships form on a team, the better it is for the team chemistry.
When everyone on the team is working towards the same goal and supporting each other, the team is more likely to be successful.

It is possible to have success as a soccer player without experiencing the same level of success as a team. As I’ve mentioned above, individual performance can be measured and recognized separately from team performance. But, both are important to factor in.
Soccer is the ultimate team sport and success as a team should always be the ultimate goal. While individual achievements can be celebrated, they should not come at the expense of the team’s overall success.
By focusing on both individual and team success, you can become a well-rounded and successful soccer player. Remember to always prioritize development over everything except fun. The rest will naturally take care of itself!
