MLS NEXT Power Rankings (U16 & U18)
MLS Next just announced that they are implementing a power rankings system for the fall season. The new addition is set to take place leading up to the MLS NEXT Fest in December 2024.
These rankings will apply exclusively to U16 and U19 MLS NEXT Elite Academy teams.
The rankings will be calculated through a pre-determined algorithm, factoring in each team’s strength of schedule, points earned, and other performance indicators. Weekly updates will be provided throughout the season.
The top two teams in each division’s rankings will qualify for the Generation Adidas Cup Qualifiers at MLS NEXT Fest. The winners of these qualifiers will earn automatic bids to the 2025 Generation Adidas Cup in April.
My Take: This is a great addition to the league. With a clear incentive for non-MLS Academies to secure a top-two spot, each week becomes more critical, adding excitement to league play. It’s also a fantastic way to enhance the experience at MLS NEXT Fest in California.
