How to Execute a Trivela Shot in a Soccer Game
A “trivela” is when you kick the ball with the outside of the foot. The angle where the ball is struck causes it to curve in the opposite of your kicking foot.
You may not use it as much as a traditional shot but it’s something you should have in your back pocket.
I love introducing new soccer moves to soccer players. The creative side that comes with it keeps the beautiful game that much more interesting.
Here are a couple of other moves I’ve written about:
What is a Trivela?
The trivela in soccer involves striking or passing the ball using the outer part of the foot instead of the typical instep.
This technique creates a bend in the ball’s trajectory and allows it to deceive the opposition with its unusual angle.
And, it looks pretty.
How to Execute a Trivela Shot
Like all new soccer moves, this one will take some practice. I’ve laid out the steps to execute a trivela shot.
For visual learners, here’s the best video to learn how to do a trivela.
Here are the steps to execute a Trivela shot like a pro:
- Position yourself appropriately: The first step to executing a Trivela shot is to position yourself correctly. You need to be at an angle to the ball, with your body turned slightly away from the goal. This will allow you to strike the ball with the outside of your foot.
- Strike the ball: As you approach the ball, focus on hitting the center of the ball’s side with the outer edge of your foot, near the base of your little toe. This will cause the ball to spin and curve, making it difficult for the goalkeeper to save.
- Follow through: After striking the ball, follow through with your kicking foot, wrapping it around the ball as it leaves your foot. This will naturally add extra spin and curve to the shot.
- Practice & practice more: Repetition is key. Start by practicing with a stationary ball and then move on to practicing with a moving ball (which is more game-like). As you become more comfortable with the technique, you can start incorporating it into your game.
