Advice for Soccer Players Playing in the Spring
Spring soccer is approaching and although it’s not the ‘real soccer season’, many still play. This is especially true for boys and girls club soccer teams.
Spring soccer can be a bit tricky. Up here in the tundra (aka northeast), it can still snow or be below freezing.
But, for many players, it doesn’t matter. It’s just more soccer! And, I love this mindset.
With the right preparation and mindset, you can make the most of your spring season and improve your game!
How to Prepare for the Spring Season
Equipment Essentials
Before you hit the field, make sure you have the necessary equipment.
The obvious include:
- Cleats
- Shin guards
- Water bottle
The not-so-obvious include:
- Gloves
- Neck or head warmer
- Long sleeve undershirt
- Warm jacket to wear before and after games
It’s important to make sure you have these well before the season starts!
Start Ramping Up Your Fitness and Conditioning
Some players tend to relax and put on some winter weight which is totally okay. Every player should be able to spend a month or two away from the game.
But, now is the time to start getting back into playing shape. Incorporate some runs into your daily routine. You don’t need to go fast, just build up the stamina for now.
It’s also important to start getting your touch back. If you have space in your living room, just juggle or do some dribbling while dinner is being made.
Start Eating Healthier
Make sure to fuel your body with a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates.
This will help you accelerate your ‘getting-back-in-shape’ phase of the year.
Also, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, especially before and after practices and games.
Make Sure to Warm Up
You know how to play soccer so there’s no point in giving suggestions like keep your head up or look to pass first.
Instead, the biggest thing you can do during the spring season is prioritize your warm-up. Because of the cooler weather, you need to make sure your body is ready to go.
This means a proper stretch and dynamic exercise before practices and games, while you are getting ready to get into a game, and after your workouts.
Don’t overlook this or you’ll find yourself on the sidelines with some type of avoidable injury!
Use This Season to Prepare for Next Fall
Spring soccer is usually a shorter season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it to prepare for next fall. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this season:
- Work on your weaknesses: Use this time to work on the areas of your game that need improvement. Whether it’s your passing, shooting, or defending, identify your weaknesses and make a plan to address them.
- Get in better shape: Spring soccer is a great opportunity to work on your fitness. Use this time to improve your endurance, speed, and agility. You’ll be in better shape for next fall and you’ll be able to perform better on the field.
- Play with confidence: Spring soccer is a great time to work on your mental game. Focus on playing with confidence and taking risks on the field. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – they’re part of the learning process.
By using the spring season to work on your weaknesses, get in shape, try new positions, and play with confidence, you’ll be well-prepared for next fall. Make the most of this shorter season and use it as an opportunity to improve your game.
Good luck with your season and don’t forget to HAVE FUN!!
