MLS Next is Bridging the Gap Between Youth and Professional Soccer
MLS NEXT is four years old and just coming out of the toddler stages. But, it’s made such a profound impact on the boys’ youth and professional soccer scene.
In just a short time, we’ve seen the play of youth soccer elevated with players getting opportunities to play professionally.
MLS NEXT is doing what the Development Academy (DA) couldn’t.
There is now a clear pathway from youth to the pro level.
MLS Next is here to stay.
In this article, let’s explore how MLS Next has reinvented soccer in the U.S.
What is the Mission of MLS Next?
The mission of MLS Next is to elevate the development of youth soccer players, preparing them for the next level.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between youth leagues and professional soccer. They are providing a platform to foster excellent training and competition.
The league’s vision includes producing future stars for Major League Soccer and the international soccer stage.
I think they have done this and will continue to progress the game.
Developmental Impact on Youth Players
MLS Next emphasizes refined training regimes and expert coaching. Every coach has to obtain a B License or equivalent.
Coaches in the program are highly qualified to develop young talent. They often have team strategies in place and will train their players to fit their style of play.
Emphasis is also placed on mental and physical conditioning to prepare players for the best competition in the U.S.
What Are the Opportunities for MLS Next Players?
MLS Next creates numerous platforms for players to shine.
Competitions and showcase events offer high visibility and the chance to be scouted by MLS academies and colleges.
Every season, there will be at least two national showcases along with playoffs for teams that qualify.
Additionally, the pathway is clear with a structured progression from youth teams to MLS Next Pro to the first teams. This is the journey that Benjamin Cremaschi took to get to Inter Miami’s first team.
On a national level, most of the USYNT teams are made up of current and former MLS Next players. The momentum will only continue.
Keep in mind that MLS Next started in 2020!
What’s Next for the Top Youth League?
With all the recent success MLS Next has had, I see more investments in the program. I think in the coming years, we’ll see…
- Expansion clubs: More clubs will enter into the league as they find success in leagues like ECNL.
- More highlights on MLS Next Pro: We are going to see MLS Next Pro being promoted more on a national level. It is the bridge between the youth and MLS levels.
- Big names being scooped up by European clubs: Cavan Sullivan is set to join Man City within the next three years. Other talented players will follow. As the U.S. continues to develop talented soccer players, European clubs will scout more in the States.
- Colleges will continue to take notice: We’ll see more college rosters filled with MLS Next players. In many programs, the international players will be replaced by U.S. talent.
- More homegrown players: We’ve seen many homegrown signings this season. As MLS Academies start younger and have more eyes on the ground, we’ll see many more homegrown contracts in the years to come.
