2024 NCAA Division I Substitution Changes For Men’s Soccer
The NCAA just approved a new substitution rule for DI men’s soccer. This change will be effective for the start of the fall 2024 season.
These changes will only take place for NCAA Division 1. NCAA DII and DIII’s existing rules will continue.
Proposed Changes:
- No Reentry is allowed in either half once a player leaves the game
- Teams will have six moments at which they can make a sub
- Substitutions can occur during any stoppage of play
- An additional moment will be given in the game goes into overtime
Old Rules:
- Players can reenter into the game once in the second half
- Players can only be substituted in on goal kicks, own throw-ins, own corner kicks, a goal is scored, or a card is given.
- The clock stops when the team that is winning makes substitutions in the last five minutes of the game
With the rule changes, coaches will have to adjust their strategies a bit. For example, they can no longer pull a player out and sub them back in to either provide more offense or defense.
The real challenge will be for coaches to get playing time for their deep benches. Many D1 programs carry 20+ players. I think the transfer portal will be busier.
I think the changes make sense and align with high-level club soccer and pros. Also, six moments are plenty to make their necessary subs.
