USMNT Fires Gregg Berhalter: What’s Next?
It comes as no surprise to many in the soccer community but Gregg Berhalter was relieved of his coaching duties this week.
Honestly, it was a long time coming…
The former USMNT Coach was appointed as the USMNT coach in December 2018. He had a rocky six years leading a talented group of players.
I think his biggest achievements were winning the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup and reaching the round of 16 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, leadership changes need to happen. This is a big step in the right direction.
Now, let’s take a look at his journey and what’s next for the men’s U.S. team.
Why Did Gregg Berhalter Get Hired?
Berhalter was hired because of his past coaching and playing experience as well as his connections within the USMNT organization.
Here is a breakdown…
1. Coaching Experience and Success in MLS
- Background: Berhalter had a solid coaching resume from his time in the MLS. He was the head coach of the Columbus Crew from 2013 to 2018, where he demonstrated his ability to build competitive teams with limited resources.
- Success: He led the Crew to the playoffs in multiple seasons and reached the MLS Cup Final in 2015.
2. Tactical Approach & Philosophy
- Soccer Philosophy: Berhalter was known for his emphasis on possession-based soccer and tactical organization. His approach was seen as a way to modernize the USMNT’s playing style and make it more competitive on the international stage. It was reflective of what made the European teams so successful.
3. International Experience
- Playing Career: Berhalter had a significant playing career, including stints in Europe and with the USMNT. This experience gave him insights into both the domestic and international soccer landscapes.
- Coaching Abroad: Before joining the Columbus Crew, Berhalter had coaching experience in Europe with Hammarby IF in Sweden, providing him with a broader perspective on coaching.
4. Familiarity with U.S. Soccer
- National Team Connection: Berhalter’s brother, Jay Berhalter, was a high-ranking official within U.S. Soccer at the time of Gregg’s hiring. While this connection raised some concerns about potential conflicts of interest, it also meant that Gregg was well-known within the organization.
On paper, everything checks out. In reality, it was a bust.
How Did Gregg Berhalter Do As USMNT’s Coach?
Under his leadership, the USMNT secured crucial victories such as a 2-0 win over Mexico in the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League final.
Another significant milestone was qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after missing out in 2018.
Under his leadership, the team won 44 games, 17 losses, and 13 draws.
He did play a pivotal role in integrating young talents like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie into the squad, helping to build a strong foundation for the future.
Controversies and Criticisms
Berhalter’s tenure was not without its controversies.
One notable issue was his handling of player relationships, which sometimes led to public disagreements. Case in point…the Gio Reyna situation.
Critics often pointed to his perceived tactical inflexibility and questioned his decisions in crucial matches.
The final straw came with the disappointing group-stage exit in the 2024 Copa América, leading to widespread calls for his removal.
His tenure ended amidst a backdrop of growing dissatisfaction among fans and analysts.
Overall, I would give his tenure a C-.
The Dismissal of Berhalter
U.S. Soccer officially announced the termination of Gregg Berhalter’s contract on July 10, 2024.
This decision came shortly after the USMNT’s early exit from the Copa América.
There were big question marks regarding Berhalter’s tactics, strategic decisions, and overall leadership.
To put it bluntly, in most matches, he looked confused and overwhelmed.
The statement cited the need for a new direction and better performance in upcoming tournaments, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
