USL to Adopt Promotion-Relegation in Historic First for U.S. Soccer

American soccer is about to change forever as the United Soccer League (USL) becomes the first U.S. sports league to adopt promotion and relegation. This is huge!
TL;DR:
The USL’s big decision means American soccer will now work more like the rest of the world. Teams that do well can move up to a higher league. Teams that struggle will drop down. This creates excitement because every game matters more.
Breaking New Ground: Why This Matters
“A new chapter in American soccer begins. The decision by our owners to approve and move forward with this bold direction is a testament to their commitment to the long-term growth of soccer in the United States,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said.
This is a pretty big deal. No other professional sports league in America has ever done this before. In the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, teams stay in the same league no matter how well or poorly they perform.
The USL is taking a different path. They’re following what works in places like England, Spain, and Germany, where soccer is king and promotion/relegation keeps fans on the edge of their seats.
How Will It Actually Work?
The USL is building a three-layer system:
- USL Division One (top tier) – launching in 2027-28
- USL Championship (second tier)
- USL League One (third tier)
Teams will move between these leagues based on how well they play. Do great? You move up. Do poorly? You drop down.
The fluid system can function within a tiered structure but not in a single-league environment like Major League Soccer (MLS).
Why Now? Perfect Timing
The timing couldn’t be better. The World Cup is coming to America in 2026, and the Olympics will be in Los Angeles in 2028. Soccer interest in the U.S. is growing fast.
“Fans and stakeholders have been clear—they want something different,” explained Paul McDonough, President of the USL. “They’re drawn to the intensity of high-stakes competition.”
What This Means For You, The Fan
If you follow a USL team, get ready for more excitement:
- Every game matters more – Teams will fight hard to move up or avoid dropping down
- More local pride – Your community’s team could climb all the way to the top level
- Better player development – Players face more pressure situations, helping them improve faster
Big Picture: A Soccer Revolution
This move shows the USL is willing to shake things up. While Major League Soccer (MLS) continues with its closed system, the USL is embracing the global model.
For smaller cities and towns across America, this creates a new dream. Your local team could someday compete at the highest level if they perform well enough.
The USL will share more details about how everything will work in the coming months. But one thing is clear: American soccer just got a lot more interesting.
