NWSL: New Entry Mechanism
The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has introduced a new entry mechanism for players under the age of 18 who wish to enter the league. This new mechanism was announced in 2022 and came into effect in the 2023 season. The mechanism allows players under the age of 18 to enter the league with the consent of their parent or legal guardian.
Under the new mechanism, teams can place eligible players on the Under-18 Entry List, which will count towards the team’s roster limit. However, these players cannot be selected in expansion drafts, and their initial contract must run through the season in which they turn 18. This means that the players will not be eligible for a new contract until they turn 18.
The new entry mechanism is a significant development for the NWSL, as it allows the league to attract and develop young talent. The mechanism also provides a pathway for young players to enter the professional game and gain valuable experience at a young age.
One of the first players to sign with an NWSL club under the new entry mechanism was Chloe Ricketts, who signed with the Washington Spirit in 2023. Ricketts, who was just 15 years old at the time, became the youngest player ever to sign an NWSL contract.
The new entry mechanism has also been welcomed by players and coaches, who believe that it will help to develop the next generation of talent in the league. Speaking about the mechanism, NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said:
“We are excited to introduce this new mechanism, which will provide a pathway for young players to enter the league and gain valuable experience at a young age. We believe that this will help to develop the next generation of talent in the league and ensure that the NWSL remains the premier women’s soccer league in the world.”
In conclusion, the NWSL’s new entry mechanism for players under the age of 18 is a significant development for the league. The mechanism provides a pathway for young players to enter the professional game and gain valuable experience at a young age. It is expected to help develop the next generation of talent in the league and ensure that the NWSL remains the premier women’s soccer league in the world.
