MLS NEXT & GA Form a Strategic Partnership

MLS NEXT and the Girls Academy (GA) have announced a strategic partnership to help improve technical standards and event opportunities across North America.
Our Takeaways:
- For players and coaches in either league, I don’t think you’ll experience any impact.
- Instead of being standalone leagues, they now form a resemblance to ECNL.
- I don’t think that MLS NEXT and GA will be able to combine events and showcases.
โOur strategic alliance with the Girls Academy fosters an aligned development pathway for boys and girls aspiring to reach their highest potential,โ said MLS NEXT General Manager Kyle Albrecht. โWe believe this is an important step in growing the sport in North America, as the alignment between both programs will greatly benefit players, families, and clubs.โ
GA Teams to Compete in the 2025 Generation Adidas Cup
To kickoff the alliance, select GA clubs will compete in a newly introduced girls’ division at the 2025 Generation adidas Cup, offering top-level players a chance to showcase their skills on an international stage.
This will be a good test so that the GA can receive feedback.
The Generation Adidas Cup is a popular event among the MLS NEXT crowd. It brings together top clubs from Canada and the U.S. as well as international teams.
How Will the Alliance Affect Other Events?
In theory, the leagues would love to streamline events and showcases. This would make it easier for players, coaches, clubs, and families to streamline their travel. But, I don’t think this is doable.
First, the field space is already limited at regional events. You’ll essentially be combining two different tourneys.
Second, there’s very little overlap between families and coaches who are involved in MLS NEXT and GA.
Third, the crowd (coaches, scouts, and families) for the boys and girls side of youth soccer is pretty segregated. Typically, you roll with one or the other.
The cons outweigh the pros.
The leagues can work together on their coaching education and philosophies. This will affect how they develop kids across the board.
