D.C. United Signs 18-Year-Old Homegrown Star Gavin Turner

D.C. United continues to demonstrate its prowess in youth development by signing promising 18-year-old midfielder Gavin Turner as their 21st Homegrown player, securing his talents through 2027 with additional options through 2029.
The Journey from Academy to Pro
Turner’s path to professional soccer began in Fall 2017 when he joined D.C. United’s U-12 team. By age 15, he had already signed an Academy contract with Loudoun United FC (USL Championship), making his professional debut in June 2022. His development has been steady and impressive, culminating in his first professional assist in May 2024 during a U.S. Open Cup match.
Turner’s signing at such a young age speaks volumes about D.C. United’s confidence in his abilities. His selection to the MLS NEXT All-Star Game suggests he could become one of the club’s most impactful Homegrown signings to date.
The DMV Pipeline
D.C. United’s Academy has established itself as a powerhouse in American soccer development. The club ranked second in MLS for minutes given to U22 players in 2024, with an impressive 8,581 minutes.
The success of D.C. United’s youth development system, particularly in the DMV area, is proving to be a sustainable model that other MLS clubs should emulate.
International Recognition
Despite his young age, Turner has already made his mark on the international stage, representing the United States Youth National Team at both U-15 and U-16 levels, scoring once in five appearances.
Looking Ahead With the signing of Turner, D.C. United reinforces its commitment to developing local talent. General Manager Ally Mackay praised Turner’s “exceptional soccer IQ” and highlighted his “high ceiling for development,” suggesting bright prospects for both the player and the club.
