MLS NEXT Bold New Changes for 2025-26

MLS NEXT just dropped some major news that will change how youth soccer works in America, with new scholarships, different game rules, and more chances for players to get noticed.
TL;DR:
Scholarships Are Now Required, Not Optional
Starting this season, every single MLS NEXT club has to offer at least one scholarship.
This isn’t just a nice gesture. It’s a requirement. Every club, no exceptions.
This scholarship can be divided among multiple players, but must equal at least one full scholarship.
Note that many clubs already offer scholarships to those who cannot afford them financially.
With most clubs having 4+ teams in MLS NEXT and roster sizes of 18+, this is a drop in the bucket, but movement in the right direction.
Game Time Gets a Major Makeover
The league is also changing how games work, especially for younger kids. And honestly, it’s kind of weird, but I like it.
For U13 players, games now have three 25-minute periods instead of two 35-minute halves. But here’s the kicker – every player on the roster must play at least one full 25-minute period without being subbed out (unless they get hurt).
This guaranteed playing time rule is huge. Too many young players sit on benches while coaches play their best players to win. Now every kid gets a real chance to show what they can do.
U14 players still play two halves, but they can now re-enter games after being substituted. More playing time, more chances to impact the game.
Parents of the top players WILL complain, but I think it’s the right move for this age.
Moving Up an Age Group? Now You Can
MLS NEXT is letting MLS Academies add a U15 age group to their Pro Player Pathway. This means U15 teams can play up against U16 competition, U16 teams face U17s, and U18 teams compete against U19s.
Playing up an age group is where players really grow. It forces them to get faster, stronger, and smarter. The best development happens when you’re slightly uncomfortable.
This gives opportunities for non-MLS Academy teams to compete against MLS Academies at almost every age group. These talented teams will get to play against players who are older. This is a very good move in my opinion.
Talent ID Weekend: A First for MLS NEXT
October 11th will be special. For the first time ever, MLS NEXT is hosting a Talent ID Weekend with no games scheduled. Instead, 13 different markets will run scouting sessions.
Instead of scouts trying to catch games here and there, they get dedicated time to really watch players. No distractions, no rushing between fields.
This shows MLS NEXT is serious about finding hidden gems. Some of the best players aren’t on the biggest clubs. This weekend gives everyone a fair shot at being seen.
More to come…
