Why Wearing Gloves in Soccer is a-OK
If you live in the northern part of the U.S. and play spring soccer, you might need to wear extra clothing in February, March, and even April.
The cold weather can do a number on our bodies. But, the most important part to keep covered are your hands and head.
While I don’t promote wearing winter hats, I do think it’s fine to wear gloves. It’s also not against the rules to wear them.
Key Takeaways From This Article:
- During cold weather games, wearing quality gloves can be the difference between keeping warm and shivering.
- Goalkeepers wear gloves but for a different purpose. It helps them get more grip and protection against the ball.
- Need a quality pair of gloves? I’d recommend this pair of Under Armour.
Last weekend was a great example. My son played in 30-degree weather in Massachusetts but forgot to wear his gloves. He was never able to get warm enough to do his best.
I think his mind and body kept thinking of ways to stay warm. His reaction time was off and just didn’t play like himself.
So, the next time I ask “Do you have everything?”, I’m sure he will double-check his soccer bag.
Here’s my case of why wearing gloves can benefit all soccer players playing in cold weather.
Why Should Soccer Players Wear Gloves?
Goalkeepers
Goalkeepers tend to wear gloves for a couple of reasons:
- Gloves help improve their grip on the ball, making it easier to catch and hold onto.
- Gloves help protect their hands from injury.
Goalkeepers often dive and slide to make saves, and gloves can help prevent cuts and scrapes on their hands.
Outfield Players
Outfield players (any position outside of goalie) may also wear gloves in colder weather to keep their hands warm.
Wearing gloves can help players maintain prevent their hands from getting numb due to the cold.
What Are the Best Gloves for Soccer?
There are many gloves that you can choose from. In my experience, the ones below are the best bang for your buck.
These gloves are great because they are made with material that will keep the hands warm but not feel very restricted.
They also provide some grip so you can throw the ball in.
These are ideal for early winter and spring games!
