Boston Joins NWSL
The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has awarded Boston expansion rights for the league’s 15th team to Boston Unity Soccer Partners, an all-female core ownership group. This marks Boston’s return to the NWSL since the Boston Breakers folded in 2018.
The new club is set to kick off in the 2026 season, which coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the United States will co-host and Gillette Stadium was announced as one of the venues.
The announcement followed the addition of two other NWSL expansion teams, Utah Royals FC and Bay Area FC, which are both slated to begin play in 2024.
Boston will be the fifteenth team to join the rising NWSL. Being in the Boston area, we are very excited to see how it impacts women’s soccer in the northeast.
This is Boston’s second go at the NWSL. Boston Breakers played from 2013 to 2017. They ceased operations because of financial troubles, including a significant amount of debt and an inability to secure a local owner or investor.
